On this week's show I'm joined by Arsenal's former Director of High Performance, Darren Burgess. We chat about the impact lockdown will have on the fitness of the players, and what they have done to offset that during this period. There's a risk of injury, but what exactly should managers and fitness staff be prepared for, as well as discussion of individual training plans, which players might be best able to cope, how 5 subs might help, and lots more.

0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to a brand new R-Splug R-Scast right here on R-Splug.com. |
0:27.0 | I hope you're well, hope you're safe and happy and healthy physically and mentally at this time. |
0:33.1 | There's a lot going on. There is a lot going on this week. I want to start today if I might |
0:39.1 | by referencing an email that I got earlier this week from a podcast listener and R-Splug |
0:45.7 | reader or a Patreon member called Andy. I hope he doesn't mind me going into this a little bit. |
0:50.1 | I'm not going to go through all the details of what he had to say, but he described himself as |
0:55.8 | a black Arsenal fan. Early in the podcast, James and I, well actually that'd be wrong to say, |
1:01.9 | it was, I said something along the lines of, let's leave all the terrible stuff that's going on |
1:09.0 | to one side and let's just do the podcast and give people a bit of an escape, which I think |
1:14.1 | is fair enough in some respects. But Andy expressed some disappointment in a very nice way, |
1:21.8 | very constructive way, I should say, it wasn't being critical that we didn't address some of the |
1:26.8 | things that are going on on the podcast because of the platform that we have. And I responded to him |
1:33.4 | and I said, A, that I was slightly overwhelmed by everything because of, it was all just beginning |
1:40.9 | to kick off in the US and the protests and everything else in the wake of the killing of George |
1:48.4 | Floyd. But B, I was, I didn't want to say the wrong thing. And Andy's email has sort of made me |
1:55.8 | realize that maybe the wrong thing is saying nothing, though when you do have a platform, it is |
2:02.2 | important to use it for good if you can do that. So let me just very quickly say, Black Lives Matter, |
2:12.2 | that our blog has an institution, if you like, but, but as representative of me, |
2:18.7 | will always stand against racism and discrimination of any kind. And we will stand in solidarity |
2:26.6 | with victims of it. I don't want to proselytize or preach here, Arsenal released a message during |
2:34.3 | the week, which said we stand against racism, we stand side by side with our Black community, |
2:39.6 | we stand with our Black players of the past, present and future, we celebrate diversity, |
