When black immigrants come to the United States, their health status is on par with white Americans.

But what happens is after one to two generations their health status actually

declines to that of black Americans.

This week on the show I talked to Lauren Markham.

Lauren is, she's written for a lot of magazines over the years,

she has a ton of stories up on the old

long form.org when you guys used to pick them. She's written about

immigration a lot. She's written about the environment. She's written about all sorts of

things. She had a book a few years ago called The Faraway

Brothers, about a pair of twins from El Salvador who made their way to the United States and what that

experience was like for them. And she has a new book out called A Map of Future Ruins on Borders and Belonging.

It's just out and it's kind of a mixture of some memoir about her own Greek heritage and an explanation of what that means

mixed with reportage about the migrant crisis in Greece and people who were caught up in that.

And I wanted to talk to her about all of those different things

and we had a great conversation.
