Summary

Leah and Mike do a deep dive into scientology finances and fundraising with Mat Pesch. Mat was formerly in charge of the money-making and money control divisions at the Flag Land Base -- the single largest source of revenue for scientology on earth. Mat's no nonsense explanations of the inner-workings of the scientology business machine are at times humorous, but always horrifying.

Today we have another one of our favorite uh yeah we have an OG on uh Matt Pesh. Hello.

0:19.0

Hello Lia. Hello Mike. Hi Matt. You guys want to talk about uh you want to give the background here Mike?

0:26.0

What what uh Matt? Yeah yeah yeah. So Matt we wanted to uh talk to you in particular and do a bit of a deep dive into Scientology and their money.

0:39.0

Money, raising how they deal with their money, what they do with their money and you are like the ideal person for that because you were both the what's called in Scientology, the Treasury Secretary and the dissemination secretary.

0:55.0

Of the largest Scientology organization in the world which is the Flag Service Organization in Clearwater, Florida and that particular organization has enormous significance in Scientology because it is the single largest source of revenue for Scientology on planet Earth.

1:15.0

In fact, I would estimate that the amount of money that comes into the Flag Service Organization each week is greater than the amount of money that is taken in by all other Scientology organizations on Earth in a week.

1:32.0

And why is that Mike?

1:36.0

Partly because everybody is required ultimately as they make their way up the Scientology bridge to total freedom to go to the Flag Service Organization where they deliver services that are only available there.

1:55.0

It is also what Scientology calls its spiritual headquarters. They used to call it the Mecca of Technical Perfection until 9-11 then they start using Mecca because it had a bad connotation to it.

2:10.0

And as such and because in order to do the highest levels which we talked about with your mother OT7 which can take 10 years, a lot of Scientologists or high level Scientologists have moved to Clearwater.

2:26.0

So there is a community of high level Scientologists that surround the Flag Service Organization and by necessity I guess of being a high level Scientologist they have to have money.

2:41.0

Like you can't get there without having money so they got a lot of wealthy Scientologists that are around in that area so they're sort of easy pickings for the people that make money in the organization.

2:55.0

Okay, that makes sense.

2:58.0

I said that Matt was both the Treasury Secretary and the dissemination Secretary and I figured I should probably explain that just a little bit.

3:07.0

The dissemination Secretary is the person who is head of the part of every Scientology organization which is called the dissemination division but they are actually responsible for selling Scientology.

3:23.0

And then the Treasury division is the part of the organization that is responsible for controlling the money like banking it and distributing it and dispersing it to pay bills and you know that sort of stuff.

3:41.0

So Matt has sort of both sides of this money equation when it comes to Scientology.

3:47.0

I wanted to say before we get started two things one is fun fact Matt pesh is married to one of our other favorite people Amy Scoby who's story with her mother Bonnie Elliott inspired the series the aftermath.

4:03.0

Yes.

4:05.0

And another fun fact and Amy now live just 10 miles up the road for me very very jealous they lived they lived in California for about two months and then left me I was very excited.

4:23.0

That you were just a few miles from me.
