In this interview, we sit down with Eeva Broberg, ECDC Principal Expert on respiratory viruses, who tells us why respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an often overlooked disease which represents a considerable risk to certain groups every winter.
Eeva also talks about the impact on healthcare, and whether current treatments like monoclonal antibodies and the introduction of vaccines in Europe are a game changer.

0:38.3 | Nonetheless, it's a virus that can be serious, especially for certain risk groups. |

1:00.9 | Can you start off a bit by telling us the basics of RSV? |
1:04.4 | What are the symptoms and how does it spread? |
1:06.7 | So RSV is one of the respiratory viruses. |
1:09.9 | It's called respiratory syncytile virus. |
1:13.9 | It causes mostly common cold type symptoms. |
1:18.8 | But it can cause also very severe conditions. |
1:21.9 | For elderly or for infants, for newborns, it can be rather severe. |
1:26.9 | And it can cause bron bronchiitis or pneumonia. |
1:30.1 | It can even cause death. |
1:31.7 | But of course in Europe, we have very good health care. |
1:34.8 | So the mortality is higher for RSV in low-income countries. |
1:39.8 | In Europe, we have a lot of supportive care and most of the cases are saved. |
1:45.8 | But of course, the lower respiratory infections can become very severe and the patient could |
1:53.3 | end up in intensive care and might need mechanical ventilation, for example, and RSV can cause death. |
