One of the challenges of raising a family of seven is that every hobby we undertake cost seven times as much.

Staying home made really good sense for a lot of years until we realized we weren't having any fun. So a few summers ago, we finally broke down and bought beach cruisers for the entire family.

If John Muir were raising children in Virginia Beach, he might say, the boardwalk is calling and I must go.

Or maybe not, but that's where you'll find us on many warm evenings.

One night, the clouds were rolling in while the members of our chain gang peddled their little

hearts out for 20 blocks towards the smoothie shop.

For some reason, we had the place to ourselves.

It seems suspicious that nobody else was enjoying the open bike lanes, cool saltwater air, and white crests of the crashing waves.

But then, the rains came.

And I don't mean just any rains.

Torrential rains.
