This week, we have our first Footnote to the Revised Introduction to Japanese history, expanding on questions we didn't get to touch on during the main series. This week, our question is: what do we know about the origins and practice of early Japanese religion, and how does it relate to what we call Shinto today?

Hello, and welcome to the history of Japan podcast, episode 541, The Way of the Gods.

0:26.7

Before we get into it today, a bit of prefacing, we've spent the past 40 episodes on a revised introduction to Japanese history,

0:34.9

my attempt to provide a brief introductory overview to Japan's history,

0:39.5

an update and expansion to the miniseries this podcast started with well over a decade ago.

0:46.4

But you'll be shocked to hear, along the way, even with 40 episodes, a lot ended up on the

0:53.0

cutting room floor. And so I started to put together

1:50.7

this is a subject that relates directly to material from episodes 502 and 503, which deal with

1:56.8

the formation of the Amato Kingdom and its mytho histories.

2:07.3

Also, a disclaimer, I believe I am legally required to give every time I do an episode that touches on this at all,

2:11.5

Shinto itself is, as I've said, an anachronistic term.

2:18.5

That specific word, which literally translates as the way of the gods, would not have been in use until the 19th century, really during the Meiji era, when Japan's traditional religion was given

2:24.3

a name to distinguish it as a specifically Japanese belief system. That attempt to mark Shinto
