Summary
Savannah Schuring, or Snazzy Cat, took on an Appalachian Trail thru-hike–which she completed in a remarkable three months–as her graduate thesis. On the way, she was interviewing hikers as to their motivations to be out on the trail and learned so much from them, and about herself, with some fascinating conclusions.

Savannah always loved the outdoors and, indeed, was a long-distance runner, but she came to love long hikes and completed her Triple Crown.

Her new book, Between the Miles, is available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G3MCZS73 . You can also check out her website at http://savannahschuring.com , while you can connect with her on social media at https://www.instagram.com/direct/t/117946462927501/, or at https://www.instagram.com/direct/t/17846517893892959/

Our Hike the Good Hike member this week is Jim Wellman, who, like Steve, is attempting an Appalachian Trail thru-hike this year, starting about a month after Steve. Jim is open about his personal mental health struggles, and hope to reach others in a similar situation. You can follow Jim on several social media platforms on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jimsonanotheradventure/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jimwellmanPADI. He also has a YouTube channel, which you can find here, https://www.youtube.com/@jimwellman76310

Finally, our Accountability Blog brings us up to date with the preparations for my own hike on the Appalachian Trail next month.
I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. I hope you want to support this critical mission.
Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out.
I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, "I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell." You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. Come on the show!

| 1:30.3 | I'm just a few weeks away from my third through hike attempt of the Appalachian Trail. So the title of this podcast, Mighty Blue and the Appalachian Trail, is very appropriate right now, as I lurched towards that date in early March. As always, I've put together what I think is a good show today. Of course, I always try to put together a good show, but you guys are the judge of that, so I hope you like what we've got lined up today. First up, Savannah Shuring, a triple crown, unless, is going to give us some unique perspectives of life on the AT. With my own hike, upcoming, I was especially taken by what Savannah had to say, because her perspectives come with data. And to be honest, I was quite surprised at some of the conclusions she asked, but she made a fascinating guest. We'll hear from Savannah in a moment. Then we've got Jim Wormone on the show, and I mentioned in our chat that he's the first Height the Good Height member that I've spoken with, though, of course, he isn't the first, you've heard. Jim is heading out the AT a few weeks after me, and he's very open about his own struggles with his mental health, most specifically is PTSD, and the impacts the trial may have on him this year. I've noticed that each of these Hight, the Good Hight members have been very articulate about not only their mental health issues, but also the way in which they allowed themselves to be asked, what might be tricky questions for them. So far I've had no hostility from many of them, |
| 1:48.6 | or even reluctance to share their own stories. It takes a certain kind of bravery and, judging |
| 1:53.0 | from the emails you send me, you appreciate them too. We'll hear from Jim after Samantha. |
| 1:58.0 | Finally, the Accountability Blog, with a bit more news to share on what has generally been |

| 2:11.1 | Snazy Cat. Today, our guest is Savannah Shuring. Hey, Savannah, thanks for coming on the podcast. How are you doing today? |
| 2:22.6 | I'm very well. Thank you. You hiked the Appalachian Trail back in 2018, I believe, and you killed it. |
| 2:29.9 | You did it in just over three months, starting in late April and finishing August of 6th. |
| 2:34.6 | We're going to tell everybody why you were so fast in a moment, but what did that window |
| 2:38.8 | demand of you day to day? |
| 2:41.4 | Because it is quite, it looks like it's about 100 and just over 100 days, isn't it? |
| 2:45.8 | Yes. |
| 2:46.5 | There was a couple complications. |
| 2:48.7 | We had to go back, or I had to go back separately from my hiking partner and finish just a little bit. |
| 2:54.3 | But, yeah, overall, it was not fun. |
| 2:56.4 | I was crying down mountains, literally. |
| 2:59.0 | My knees hurt so bad the entire time. |
| 3:01.5 | I have a rare genetic predisposition where my knees track laterally. |
