Summary

We meet a member of the Class of 2012 this week, who happens also to be a member of this years class of 2026. In fact, Todd Sears is starting the day after I start, in March this year.

He had a long career in military intelligence, and brings a military discipline to his hike, both back in 2012 and in his plans for this year. I should be meeting him very early on as he will doubtless breeze past me at speed.

You can read about his earlier hike from a blog that he wrote; Nor'easter's 2012 Appalachian Trail Journal : March 20, 2011 : Trail Journals, Backpacking and Hiking Journals. To compare his hiking and his writing back then, you should check out the Tek, as Todd is one of their trail correspondents this year; NorEaster, Author at The Trek

We start our season of Hike the Good Hike participants for 2026 with Elizabeth Thompson, who has endured both domestic abuse and cancer in recent years. She is hiking the PCT and our conversation became quite emotional. You can keep up with Elizabeth on Instagram at (@footstepsandforests) • Instagram profile , and on YouTube at elizabeth

With just eight weeks to go before I head out, I share some mildly disappointing news about my gear, and some encouraging news about my protein intake!!

I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. I hope you want to support this critical mission.

Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out.

I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, "I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell." You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. Come on the show!

to introduce you all to the 2026 cohort of Hike the Good Hike Hikers,

0:55.0

each of whom has their own, often emotional story about how hiking helps them with their

own mental health. I know that it certainly helps me in that regard, so I went into these

1:04.5

conversations with an anticipation of why I'd hear. What I wasn't prepared for was the level

1:09.2

to which these seven hikers would share the

1:11.1

stories with me. I was a stranger, but several of the interviews got quite visceral, quite early,

1:16.4

and I was privileged to hear what they all had to say. You'll be hearing in the first of those

interviews today. But our main guest today is Todd Sears or Norista. Todd is a retired intelligence

admission. His planning is quite intense and he will be a fellow member of my class of 2026 starting

the day after me. But it's going to be Todd's second 80th row hike so I invited him to come on

the show and talk about both his past hike and his upcoming adventure. There's a link between each

hike as you'll hear. Todd will be on in a moment. Then in our first Hight the Good Hike interview, I'll introduce you all to Elizabeth Thompson, who's gone through a lot in her life and is hitting the PCT this year. We had some minor technical issues in the middle of our conversation, but I was able to salvage it with some editing. I'm sure we get a lot out of hearing from Elizabeth. And then the accountability blog, which has turned out to be quite a hit according to many of the emails I get. And funny enough, it's allowed me to prepare for my hiking ways that I hadn't anticipated. I'm far more conscious of my preparation now that I'm doing this blog, and I've been extremely intentional in my gear choices

and my training and talking to these guys about their gear has educated me far more than I'd
