Summary

Ellen Langford, or Adventurine, joins us today. Ellen is a professional artist who had dreamed of hiking the Appalachian Trail for several years before 2025 opened a window for her.

On the trail, she found logistics to be challenging, yet utterly "embraced the suck" as she knocked off 1700 miles before an unfortunate health condition curtailed her hike.

She took her art tools of the trade with her, sketching as she went along. You can catch up with Ellen and her art at her website, http://www.ellenlangford.com/ . You can also follow her on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/p/DSaG6ObjgCu/

Also today, Nina Banducci introduced us to Polarsteps, an app that tracks and records our journeys, incorporating photos and text. Nina will be out on various trails next year to provide trail magic and show off the app to hikers. I intend to use it on my upcoming AT thru-hike next year. You can find out more at https://www.polarsteps.com/

Then, my accountability blog focuses more on gear, as more "stuff" has arrived. It's getting real!!

I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting https://parentingmattersfl.org/eventer/hike-with-steve-empowering-parents-one-step-at-a-time/edate/2024-04-15/. I hope you want to support this critical mission.

Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA8ImK4qpNc&list=PLu8u88nsJtgWZxT8DLwEW2yXcz4gT6HXs There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out.

I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, "I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell." You're the person we need to hear from. This week we meet a lady I met for the first time last year when I asked if anybody would want to join me to try to offer some help in Hot Springs after the disaster of Hurricane Helene.

0:51.3

Well, Ellen Langford, who's a regular listener to the show, stepped up

0:54.6

and came to join me and three other guys, Rob, Alan and Stuart, in Hot Springs for three days.

I can't say we made a huge difference, but it's sometimes just about showing up that seems

1:04.7

to help in some small way. Anyway, Ellen, who became adventuring on the trail, told us then

1:10.2

that she was planning a

1:11.1

2025 Appalachian Trail through hike, so we stayed in touch. I followed along with her journey

1:16.0

this year on Facebook and invited her to come on the show and share her story. She's a lovely

woman, and I think you'll enjoy hearing how her year are unfolded. She'll be on in a moment.

After Ellen, we meet another woman, Nina Banducci from Polar Steps. Nina reached out to

1:29.9

me several weeks back to tell me about Polar Steps, which is a travel app where you can record your

journey and add pictures along the way. Seems it's big in Europe and Nina is getting integrated

into the hiking community to see if it takes with an American audience. I checked the app out. It is

1:44.0

entirely free by the way and I invited her along to tell us about it. She'll be along after Ellen. I think you'll be quite impressed by both her and the app. Then my latest accountability report, with packages turning up on my doorstep weekly and burning a hole in my pocket. I think I might have discovered why I normally leave this stuff to the last minute. It's way too expensive if you give yourself plenty of lead time to collect

new gear. So that's how the show's going to pan out. Let's start out now and meet my friend,
