Hello and thank you for listening to the history of World War II podcast, episode 518, Stalin's latest mistake.

Last time on September 27, 1942, General Paulus came at the northern section of Stalingrad from the northwest in three columns. Ironically, the first victims of the defender's guns were not Germans,

but Russian civilians. They had been hiding in the basements of the closest complex to the Germans, and when they

started running, they were in between the defending machine guns and their targets. Within

minutes, all of them were dead. The Germans came on. Between German artillery and heavy

machine gun fire, they were able to approach and drive back

the defender's initial line. Paulus was both pleased, yet frustrated. Yes, his men were now within

Northern Stalingrad, but they had to fight to keep moving, slowly, and they had to fight to just

maintain what they had just taken.

It was time for something different.
