Peter is a patent consultant who embarked on his intermittent fasting journey not for weight loss, but to enhance his metabolic health. Peter shares how his interest in autophagy, sparked by a podcast featuring David Sinclair, led him to initially adopt a 20:4 fasting schedule. This approach has not only helped him maintain a healthy weight but also significantly reduced his biological age, showcasing the profound health benefits beyond mere weight management.

Peter discusses the unexpected advantages of fasting, such as improved resilience to illnesses and enhanced metabolic flexibility. He recounts how his fasting routine, which began during the COVID-19 lockdowns, has transformed his health, allowing him to maintain muscle mass through strength training while experiencing a drop in weight. His story highlights the broader health benefits of fasting, emphasizing that it's not just about the numbers on the scale but about overall well-being and vitality.

For those new to intermittent fasting, Peter advises focusing on the health benefits beyond weight loss. He encourages listeners to consider fasting as a tool for improving metabolic health and resilience, rather than just a weight loss strategy. By sharing his journey, Peter hopes to inspire others to explore the potential of fasting to unlock surprising health benefits and achieve a new level of wellness.

I'm your host, Jen Stevens, author of the New York Times bestseller Fast Feast Repeat,

as well as the book that started at all, Delay Don't Deny.

0:14.0

I lost over 80 pounds thanks to intermittent fasting, after learning how to delay my eating, rather than denying myself the delicious foods I want to eat.

0:24.8

Now, who's ready to hear an inspirational intermittent fasting story?

0:30.2

That's why we're here. So let's get excited to talk to today's guest.

0:49.7

Hi, everybody, and welcome to episode 514 of intermittent fasting stories.

0:51.7

Today I'm here with Peter Savage.

0:57.6

Peter lives in Hollister, California, and he is a patent consultant. Welcome, Peter.

1:03.2

Thank you, Jen. Great to see you in person. I've been listening for about a year, so yeah, you look great.

1:45.0

Thank you so much. I've got my Christmas sweater. We're recording this in December, but it comes out in April, so by the time this comes out, I should be wearing, hopefully not a sweater anymore. I'm ready for the warm to come back. But it's great to talk to you today. And you know I like to start by asking what brought you to intermittent fasting and when was that? And I already know this is going to be a different kind of story. You didn't come to lose 100 pounds. You came for other reasons. So tell us about that. No, it'll be totally different. And what I said to you before the call, I've been listening for about a year. And, you know, it's about 90% women, I guess, probably on it. And they talk about their husbands. And a bunch of them say, oh, my husband's lean no matter what he eats and all that.

1:51.2

So I'm one of those guys. You know, I woke up this morning. I'm six foot four. Oh, wow. And I weighed 173 pounds this morning. And the most I've ever weighed in my entire life since 11th grade when I

1:58.1

turned six foot four is 205, which is a BMI of 25.

2:04.3

So I've never been in even the little chubby category, right?

2:08.3

Right.

2:08.9

So I'm one of those guys, right, like the husband.

2:11.1

So the question is, why the hell would I even have started intermittent fasting, right?

2:15.5

Because a lot of the women say, you know, the husband say, nah, I don't feel like it. So here was my story. The first day of

2:23.0

the COVID lockdowns was April 10th, 2020. And since I'm a consultant and I work from home, it

2:29.7

wasn't a big deal for me. But I did my, some of my projects got canceled. So, you know, I was watching a

2:36.4

YouTube video of Joe Rogan interviewing David Sinclair of Harvard. And Sinclair at the beginning of

2:44.7

the podcast was talking about fasting and talking about it's really healthy to feel hungry.
