Summary

Tesla has finally rolled out the rear-wheel drive Cybertruck, but it’s VERY different from the one they first announced. I’ll tell you all about what you get and what you don’t on this cheaper version of Tesla’s stainless steel truck. Plus: Tesla’s imminent Spring software update brings a much-requested new feature that should keep a lot of Model Y rear liftgates from getting dented, and more!

the rear wheel drive cyber truck, but it's very different from the one they first announced.

Yeah. What's happening, friends, Ryan McCaffrey joining you for episode 506 of your weekly Tesla and EV podcast. I call it Ride the Lightning.

1:07.5

This one's publishing on April 13th, 2025, and there is so much to get to this week that I'm just going to jump right in, starting with the headline story.

1:13.2

It turns out I was only 10 days off of my prediction that Tesla would introduce the rear wheel drive cyber truck by the end of Q1 because on April 10th, they did just that. However,

1:20.6

what makes this particularly interesting is it's not the same 250 mile range $62,000 truck that they first announced back at the

1:30.7

cyber trucks launch at the end of November of 2023, which as you recall, that particular

1:36.8

configuration as announced, I didn't personally think was a very good value. Now what they've

1:43.6

delivered instead is quite different,

1:46.0

and I will tell you up front that for me, at first glance, it sounded pretty darn good,

1:53.0

but then the further I dug into it, the less appealing it sounded, as I went through all of the differences between it and the all

2:02.8

wheel drive, aka the dual motor cyber truck. So let me tell you about all of those differences

2:08.6

now and you can decide for yourself how you feel about it. So the single biggest difference

2:16.2

is the range.

2:18.3

It is not, as previously announced, a standard range rear wheel drive, and as such, it's not $62,000

2:27.8

before the tax credit.

2:29.9

It is a long range rear wheel drive, as Tesla offers on both the three and the Y.

2:35.9

Well, for the moment, not the Y, but it'll be back on the Y.

2:39.3

But it's a long-range rear-wheel-drive cyber truck for $70,000.
