Summary

The Lord told Emma Smith to “expound scriptures” by the Spirit, saying this was his “voice unto all.” So how did women of the Church in the 19th century use the scriptures, in particular the Bible, in their teaching, exhorting, and writing? In this episode, Dr. Amy Easton-Flake discusses her research publications about how early Latter-day Saint women used scripture to understand their divine roles and change their society, and why modern Latter-day Saint women should do the same.

0:05.0	I want to kick off today's episode by sharing a verse of scripture that's always fascinated me.
0:09.0	It's in doctrine of covenants 25 verse 7.
0:12.0	This is the revelation where the Lord speaks through Doctrine and Covenant is 25 verse 7.
0:12.7	This is the revelation where the Lord speaks
0:14.9	through the Prophet Joseph Smith, to the Prophet's wife,
0:17.3	Emma.
0:17.9	It's one of the rare places in scripture
0:20.2	where we get the Lord speaking to a woman about being a woman in the church.
0:25.0	And listen to verse 7.
0:26.8	The Lord says to Emma, and thou shalt be ordained under his hand to expound scriptures and to exhort the church according as it shall be
0:36.3	given thee by my spirit. And then in the very last verse of this revelation the
0:41.2	Lord says and this is my voice unto all. The reason why
0:46.2	that verse is so fascinating is because here we have in the 19th century the
0:51.1	Lord directing women of the church to do something that was primarily reserved for male ministers.
0:58.0	That is to expound and explain and teach the church from the scriptures.
1:04.0	So how did women in the 19th century do this?
1:07.0	How did they use the scriptures in particular
1:09.0	the Bible in their preaching, teaching,
1:12.0	exhorting, and in their personal writings.
1:14.2	How did they use the scriptures to understand their divine roles
1:17.2	and frankly to change the society they lived in?
