Summary

The West Memphis Three case remains one of the most debated criminal cases in modern U.S. history, marked by conflicting interpretations of evidence, questions about investigative methods, and ongoing disagreement about guilt or innocence. While Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. were convicted in 1994, years of scrutiny have raised concerns about the reliability of key evidence, including Misskelley’s confession and disputed forensic findings. The emergence of alternative suspects and new DNA testing further complicated the case, leading to their release in 2011 through Alford pleas while maintaining their innocence. Ultimately, the case highlights broader issues within the justice system, including the risks of wrongful conviction, the influence of public perception, and the importance of thorough, unbiased investigations. As we conclude this case in its entirety, I want to remind you of the victims who don’t get a second chance and still need justice: Stevie Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers. What's up, you guys? I'm Andrea. And I'm Haley. And you're listening to Inhuman, a. Happy day.

0:29.7

Okay, so last week we dove in, head first to the West Memphis 3 case, the trial.

0:41.9

We left off Thursday, I guess it was, with Damien's trial. And so today we're going to kind of start out going over Jason's trial.

0:48.3

And if you recall, Jason and Damien were tried together, whereas Jesse Muskelly Jr., he was tried separately,

0:56.0

and we're going to talk about Jason's portion of the trial, their convictions, and the

1:01.5

aftermath, and kind of where things stand today, because there has been movement in this case,

1:06.6

surprisingly, but it's still kind of open of open ended. So while there is some hopefully

1:15.3

good news on the horizon, we still are kind of sitting in the same sad, depressing place.

1:22.4

Right.

1:23.0

Fortunately. So just to remind you, Jason's attorney, Jason Baldwin's attorney, did file for a motion to have his trial separated from Damien's.

1:32.4

And we discussed that in part two.

1:35.2

And Judge Burnett denied their motion.

1:38.3

So Damien and Jason had to be tried together.

1:41.7

I get why that happened from the judge's perspective, like,

1:47.8

you know, save money and whatever. But it's so frustrating to me that they, because I feel like

1:54.2

that might not give them a fair trial, right? And everything is about a fair trial. A hundred percent.

2:00.1

And the fact that, like, not that they should have denied Jesse's too, but I'm saying, like,

2:05.4

if they were going to deny Jason's, then they should have denied Jesse's or they should

2:08.9

have just approved for all three men to have young men, whatever, to have their trials

2:15.7

separate or all together.

2:18.5

Yeah.

2:19.6

In my opinion, that would be the fair choice.
