Summary

Chloé Cooper Jones is a philosopher and journalist whose work has appeared in GQ, The Verge, The Believer and many other publications. Her new book is Easy Beauty. ”I literally didn't talk to anyone in my life about disability until I was, like, 30. Ever. Not my husband, not my friends, as little as possible to my own mother. I had this very bad idea that what I needed to do in every single social situation was wait until people could unsee my body…. And it was all in service of trying to be truly recognized or truly seen. And, of course, what was happening is I was involved in a complete act of self erasure because my body and my real self are related…. There is no real me without my physical self…. I did not think I was going to ever write about this, but once I started, it felt like I met myself for the first time.” Show notes: @CCooperJones chloecooperjones.com Cooper Jones on Longform 00:00 Easy Beauty (Avid Reader Press/Simon & Schuster • 2022) 01:00 "Fearing for His Life" (The Verge • Mar 2019) 02:00 "Contemplating Beauty in a Disabled Body" (New York Times Magazine • Mar 2022) 19:00 "Such Perfection" (The Believer • Jun 2019) Learn more about your ad choices. Hello, welcome to the Longform Podcast. I'm Max Linsky. I am kind of losing my voice. I'm

0:14.6

here with my two co-hosts, Aaron Lammer, Evan Ratliffe, gentlemen. Hello. It's sick week

0:19.8

on the Longform Podcast. Brought to you by COVID. My main COVID symptom is that I've lost

0:28.6

my voice. Although, every time I lose my voice like this, I kind of wish it was always like

0:31.9

this. It's a nice, sultry sound. I'll give you that. You sound kind of like me when you're

0:37.1

sick, I feel. Yeah. Well, you know, you have a great voice, man. Both of you guys have great

0:42.5

voices, unlike me. Who was on the podcast this week? This week, I talked to Chloe Cooper Jones

0:49.5

and Chloe has a new book out. It just came out yesterday. It's called Easy Beauty. It is

0:55.2

a memoir and it is a memoir about her life in many, many respects, including what it is

1:03.0

like to move through the world in a disabled body and how she thinks about that identity

1:08.0

and how the way that she thinks about that identity has changed over the years and particularly

1:14.0

over the last couple of years when she became a parent. Chloe is a philosopher. She became

1:21.2

a journalist. She started by writing about tennis. She got nominated for a Pulitzer for

1:24.7

a feature she did for the verge. But really, we spent the whole time talking about this book

1:30.0

and the way that it changed how she thinks about herself and how she thinks about the world.

1:36.8

And I will tell you guys, this is a bit of a spoiler alert. There are multiple moments

1:41.2

in this interview where actually I was rendered speechless where she sets up things and

1:45.6

like my slow ass brain just didn't know quite how to respond. So it's a good one. Now I'm

1:51.7

excited to hear it. I'm rendered speechless by this introduction and that I can't think of anything

1:56.5

to say and have not spoken for approximately seven days. But I would be in remiss if I did not

2:03.3

mention that this show is produced in partnership with Vox Media to help us make it thanks to them.

2:09.6

And now here's Max with Chloe Cooper Jones.
