Summary

Rob comes from a rough background. Physical abuse, emotional abuse — you name it, he probably experienced it. But overcoming that background and carrying on made Rob a bootstrapper to the core. For this podcast, Rob has perhaps the most famous bootstrapper of them all on as a guest: JD Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy. JD and Rob had similar upbringings, full of chaos and dysfunction. In a can't-miss conversation, they swap war stories and get deeply personal as they try to uncover the roots of dysfunction in our society — and discuss the role of personal responsibility in conquering such adversity. Hello my fellow Problematics, now look, you may or may not know that I come from a pretty rough

0:10.6

background, an overcoming that background and continuing on made me a bootstrapper to the core.

0:17.3

This week I've got probably the most famous bootstrapper in America with me, a man by the name of

0:21.6

JD Vance, who wrote Hillbilly LG, one of the biggest books of the past decade. So dysfunction,

0:28.0

bootstraps and personal responsibility, this is Rob Smith's Problematic.

Again guys, you may not know that I come from a pretty rough background, I am not a victim,

0:50.5

I do not use this to make people feel sorry for me, but there is a lot of dysfunction in my

0:57.2

background and to understand the way that I see the world, you have to kind of know some of the

1:01.9

roots of that dysfunction. I was raised in a single parent household, single mother, dad was not

1:07.5

around, when I was younger, went through physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, like all of

1:14.0

that other stuff that you can think of, I went through this, I talked about it in my book,

1:18.9

always a soldier, bullied in elementary school, I was the only black kid in my elementary school,

1:24.4

so I was bullied for being the only black kid, then when I got to middle school and high school,

1:28.6

that were nearly 100% black, I was bullied because I quote unquote, talk white, dad wasn't around,

1:35.1

was dealing with a lot of this stuff, I have cousins that were in and out of jail, like all of this

1:40.0

stuff, and for me, and I've talked about this a lot, what saved me from all of this stuff,

1:45.6

and what made me a bootstrapper, and what gave me sort of the discipline that I needed was the

1:50.7

military, right? So I come from a great deal of dysfunction, and at this point right now,

1:58.1

I hate dysfunction, I separate myself from it whenever I can, but I'm also very curious about

2:04.8

the roots of this dysfunction. Now, I told you guys, I want to bring in JD Vance to this conversation,

2:11.9

if you are listening to this podcast, I don't have to give you this guy's introduction,
