We left off last time near the end of 1798.

People of Cairo rose up against the French occupation and were brutally

suppressed. In his personal life Napoleon was reeling from the news of Josephine's

betrayal.

It must have felt like the walls were closing in.

Every local rebellion so far had been crushed,

but the population remained restive.

The Ottoman Sultan had declared war on France and was massing his armies to retake Egypt. The Royal Navy controlled the Mediterranean, choking off Napoleon's lines of supply and communication back to France, blockading Egyptian ports.

An amphibious invasion along the coast was expected in the spring.

The erstwhile Mamluk rulers of Egypt, Mirad Bay, and Ibrahim Bay, were still on the loose, raiding, causing mischief, and biting their time in hopes of returning to power.

Back in Europe, the French Republic was fighting for survival once again.
