Now, I imagine that by this point in mid-December of 2024, everyone has, at the very

least, heard about the dramatic events unfolding in Syria over the past few weeks,

culminating in the fall of the Syrian government.

The Syrian government has lost control of Aleppo for the first time since the start of the

country's 13-year-old war after Islamic rebel fighters advanced and captured most of the

city over the weekend.

Just over a week since it started and this extraordinary rebel advance rolls on, right into

the heart of Syria's fourth largest city, Hamar.

The Islamist fighters of Hayat Tahir al-Sham cheered as they go.

Syrian rebel leaders say they are now in full control of the strategic city of Homs after

government forces withdrew. The city's capture leaves the

road to Damascus open for the main rebel offensive from the north, while opposition factions in the

south are already on the capital's doorstep. Syrian rebels advanced toward the capital city

of Damascus on Saturday, as front lines collapsed across the country, posing an existential threat to President Bashar al-Assad's 24-year rule.

Syrian rebel forces have toppled the Syrian regime, and tonight the ousted president Bashar al-Assad is in Moscow after fleeing Syria.

This was the scene today in the capital city of Damascus.

We have video of citizens filling the streets, celebrating taking down statues, as you see there,

of the Assad family, whose regime held a grip on Syria for some 50 years with support from Iran and Russia.
