Summary

We open this pod with a short discussion on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the reactions from a few developers that are headquartered in and nearby the affected regions. Then, Ren and Patrick have awoken as Tarnished and seek a better horse in Elden Ring. Ren's enjoying her time but wishes some of From Soft's design ethos was more evident in the open world (and that damn horse), and not just in specific (spectacular) moments. After the break, Cado is exploring a different kind of fucked up swamp in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, the latest expansion which adds a bevy of new mechanics and a more engaging campaign than past Destiny 2 dlcs. Rob's been checking out Grid Legends, an racing game with delightfully charming FMV storyline, and the racing is ok too.

Discussed: Ukraine 0:44, Elden Ring 6:40, Small quest spoilers 32:42 - 34:09, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen 57:06, Grid Legends 1:27:53, Outro and Announcements 1:53:37

So obviously we're recording this the day that Russia has invaded Ukraine and it's yet another one of those days where it feels

0:46.5

At once very strange and very fortunate to be sitting comfortable and safe at home talking about video games

0:53.9

It is heartbreaking and scary to think about all the people whose homes and towns now line the path of a major war

1:02.6

last night I was checking in with friends who have people in Harkiv and

Sorry, I have the pulse pronunciation my head the love of

but I asked you

1:13.9

And I know that many of us have friends in Ukraine, Russia or the broader region who look upon these events with

1:20.5

real and immediate dread

1:22.7

Not out of nationalism, but also an out of an understanding of our common humanity and how nationalism and imperialism threatened that and

1:31.0

The shape and impact those forces have had in the region in the recent and more distant past

1:36.6

The thing I add for myself here is that I often see these topics discussed through the lens of

1:42.1

US Germany after in frames built to justify its perpetuation or in opposition to it

1:47.9

I think it is easy for those of us who are aware of the United States violent policing of the post-war two world

1:54.7

It's viciousness in the war on terror or it's history regarding the whole sum of the Western hemisphere south of the Rio Grande as a strategic backyard

2:03.8

To be controlled from Washington those of us whose perspective has been shaped by that awareness can be

2:09.7

very cynical just five or so about the rhetoric from Western politicians and militarists when it comes to Russia and its own actions

2:17.7

But I'd also stress that this cuts across a lot of complicated history and politics that is immediate and familiar to people from Eastern Europe and

2:25.9

Is much harder to parse from within a US and Western European oriented discourse

2:31.2

There's a temptation to turn this into another stage for familiar debates in our own political context
