And I know that many of us have friends in Ukraine, Russia or the broader region who look upon these events with

real and immediate dread

Not out of nationalism, but also an out of an understanding of our common humanity and how nationalism and imperialism threatened that and

The shape and impact those forces have had in the region in the recent and more distant past

The thing I add for myself here is that I often see these topics discussed through the lens of

US Germany after in frames built to justify its perpetuation or in opposition to it

I think it is easy for those of us who are aware of the United States violent policing of the post-war two world

It's viciousness in the war on terror or it's history regarding the whole sum of the Western hemisphere south of the Rio Grande as a strategic backyard

To be controlled from Washington those of us whose perspective has been shaped by that awareness can be

very cynical just five or so about the rhetoric from Western politicians and militarists when it comes to Russia and its own actions

But I'd also stress that this cuts across a lot of complicated history and politics that is immediate and familiar to people from Eastern Europe and

Is much harder to parse from within a US and Western European oriented discourse

There's a temptation to turn this into another stage for familiar debates in our own political context
