you reach the end of the life all right welcome to middle up your podcast episode 455 today we were doing the year in the life of Metallica series. I haven't done this

in years, but we started this series a long time ago where we're going to go through every year of the band's

catalog and excruciating detail so that you could even pull up all of the active years of the band in here.

Everything they did. We stopped at 2012. So that's what we're going to focus on on today's episode.

I'll read a listener email here in a minute where they asked me to revisit this series.

And it's a great idea because there's so many things that happen in the band's life,

even in a year where no major record came out, no major tour happened.

Like 2012, where, you know, some of the most interesting things did happen in the band.

Okay, so 2012, we do have the 20th anniversary of the Black album where they went to Europe

and played festivals, but we also have a residency in Mexico City where they were preparing

for the through the never stuff.

But then we also have the Orion Festival, which is really what we're

going to talk about today is the Orion 2012 festival, the first one in New Jersey. What was cool

about it? Why it worked? Why it failed. And then also another really interesting thing happened in

2012 that we're going to get into later where, that really set Metallica up to sort of be the

arbiters of their own creative destiny,
