0:03.0	I was broke because I didn't get paid very much to do American graffiti.
0:07.0	It took me two and a half years to do it.
0:10.0	And so I was desperate to get another job.
0:16.0	When I had gotten the deal to do American graffiti,
0:20.0	the United Artists who I made the first deal with, the development, said, you got any other
0:26.9	ideas?
0:27.8	And I said, well, I've been thinking about kind of a space adventure, Saturday, matinee,
0:32.6	serial kind of movie.
0:34.0	And they said, okay, well, we'll do that, too.
0:36.0	So when I finished American graffiti,
0:38.3	the studio was, the Universal was not going to release it. I was dead broke. And so I had to get a job
0:46.3	just to live. And so I had this deal to do this space film. And so I went to United Artists with this idea of the space film, and they turned it down.
1:00.3	And then I went to Universal for the idea of the space film, and they turned it down.
1:04.2	And finally, in the process of a screen the film for anybody and everybody who would look at it
1:09.6	in order to try to get it released,
1:11.5	American graffiti.
1:13.5	Al-Lad Jr. saw it, who was the head of 20th Century Fox, and he said, I love this movie.
1:18.1	You're very talented, and what do you want to do?
1:20.6	And I said, well, I'm trying to get this space thing off the ground.
1:24.3	And he said, okay, well, I'll fund the screenplay.
1:29.4	By this time, I had written a very long script,
