On this episode of Newt's World, as we gather with family and friends later this week for the Thanksgiving holiday,

I wanted to devote an episode to the uniquely American tradition and history of Thanksgiving.

When we imagine the first Thanksgiving, we think of the Mayflower Pilgrims and Native Americans,

gathered together at a long table outside celebrating with a feast.

In fact, what we consider the first Thanksgiving was celebrated on October 1621,

after the Pilgrims first harvest.

The feast lasted for three days and included games and all around good cheer.

It was attended by 90 Wapanoag warriors and 53 Pilgrims,

according to Pilgrim Edward Winslow's account.

They gathered together to give thanks to the Lord for the bounty of the harvest

and the rich natural resources of this American continent.

Today's Thanksgiving still reflects the American values of the holiday
