Summary

This week, we're unpacking a rather odd classic of Japanese literature: the Ise Monogatari, a collection of short tales that are probably about a famously seductive aristocrat, but which were in large part not written by him--and which have oddly political meanings given their often lascivious nature. What are the tales about? And what can we glean from reading them today?

Hello and welcome to the history of Japan podcast, episode 446. In Days of Old, there was a man.

0:24.9

To get the obvious out of the way, this is the first podcast I'm recording in the wake of the assassination of former Prime Minister Abbe Shinzal.

0:34.2

I've gotten a lot of requests over the last few days to do something on this, and I definitely

0:39.1

will at some point, though I am undecided on what I want to do between a full episode or

0:45.6

something shorter like the Patreon newsletter. However, regardless of what I do, I do want to

0:51.1

give this a few weeks. I am not a journalist, and breaking news is not my

0:55.5

specialty. I'd like some time for the dust to settle before I start trying to think through

1:00.6

what this all means. Plus, it seems like some of the facts of the matter are still unclear. New

1:05.8

details are still being revealed as we speak. So, long story short, yes, something is coming, no, I have not decided exactly what

1:14.5

or exactly when.

Now, let's get on with the show.

1:20.6

On this podcast, over our run together, we've covered many of the great stories of Japanese

literature, from the moon princess Kagia and the tale of the the bamboo cutter to the cutting sarcasm of Seishonagon, from

1:32.8

the meandering pessimism of Kamono Cholme to the nostalgic romanticism of the

1:38.0

Warriors of the Tale of Heike.

1:40.9

But there's one classic of Japanese literature we haven't really dealt with at all,

1:45.3

chiefly because it is, in my opinion, one of the most challenging ones to get a grasp on at all.

1:51.7

The story in question would be Isay Monogatari, variously translated as the Tales of Isay

1:58.1

or the Isay Stories.

2:00.9

In its original form, Isay Monogatari likely dates back to the 800s or so of the common era,

2:07.8

but it's hard to be sure of that or much else.

2:10.8

The authorship of the stories, or even the timing of some of them,
