When the Matrix came out in 1999, the Bukkowski sisters probably did not expect that a scene

in their movie would give birth to a right-wing political movement.

In the scene in question, Morpheus, played by Lawrence Fishburn, opens his hands, revealing

two pills.

If Neo, played by Keanu Reeves the God, chooses the Red one, he has promised the truth about

human existence, that none of it is real.

The movie posits a reality dubbed the Matrix, in which robot overlords are farming the energy

of human beings and keeping their minds occupied by jacking their brains into a virtual reality,

which we simply know as human existence.

Then one day the pickup artist or P.O.A. community alongside other misogynists and right-leaning

trolls decided to co-op the term.

They imbued it with meaning, if you take the Red Pill you will be shown the uncomfortable

reality.

That men are the real ones being oppressed, not women.

A subreddit called the Red Pill served as a center of discussion for this new community.

They used the message board to commiserate and push each other deeper down the rabbit hole.

The term was soon adopted by the alt-right and even elements of the mainstream right.

Their version of Red Pilling involves waking up into right-wing belief, with a sliding

scale of extremism.
