at Berta, you know, what were you doing before that and how were you one of the chosen ones? Yeah well it was kind of a

series of lucky occurrences but you know I think like both of you guys it really started I think in some ways fortunately in that I had my own struggles with my weight and you know growing up just by playing sports year round I still was always kind of a chubby kid and then you know I went off to college and

basically was eating the same stuff that I had eaten throughout high school and earlier

where I was you know eating the low-fat pasta and loading up on

cereal and skim milk and but because I wasn't playing sports year-round

anymore I started packing on the weight and you know like like a lot of folks I kind of initially

thought okay well this be easy I just start going to the gym every day cutting my fat

and my calories a bit more and you know doing that obviously it didn't work very well I felt like crap and the

weight stayed on and then I was basically kind of fortunate in that a family member told me

hey you should try this crazy low-carb thing.

And I basically started with cutting out the cereal, cutting out the carbohydrates, and lost nearly

50 pounds, and basically have kept it off ever since despite med school,

residency, three young kids. So I've been eating a low-carb diet now for more than 15 years and a ketogenic diet now for about five years.
