Summary

In this week's review, I continue our six-week journey through Stephen King's novella collection: Different Seasons, with the story: "Apt Pupil."  Despite the lack of supernatural elements, I argue that this is Stephen King's most horrific story at this point of publication. Join me as I take a deep dive into the squalid mind of Todd Bowden as he discovers that evil takes many shapes, and often times resembles the man who looks back at you from your mirror.  Make sure you stick around next week when I review Bryan Singer's adaptation starring Brad Renfro and Magneto himself, Sir Ian McKellan. Please note that this episode originally aired on December 20, 2014. This re-release includes a new introduction contextualizing the elements of corrupted youth by a hateful culture through a modern lens.  As always, write in at stephenkingcast@yahoo.com Follow me on Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook and Bluesky. Hello everyone and welcome to the Stephen King cast, One Man's Musings on the Works of Stephen King.

Each week I will review one entry in the bibliography of Stephen King and the chronological order of publication.

And today we are going to examine the novella apt pupil from 1982's collection of different seasons.

0:18.9

Now, just a little disclaimer before we get any further into this episode.

This review was first published in 2014, and you're currently hearing my voice from outside of time.

I am recording this new introduction from 2026 because I feel that I wanted to include

0:43.1

a little update onto apt pupil because I think that since this original recording, there's a lot

0:52.1

of thoughts that Stephen King included within this novella

0:58.3

that are very pertinent to the world that we find ourselves currently living in

1:02.1

especially for that of young men

1:05.6

so as you know and I don't believe that I talked about it much

1:10.5

in the original review,

1:11.9

but there is a term for a type of young person who feels entitled and feels drawn to treating others poorly due to a sense of superiority.

1:34.3

And it's much more complicated than that, but the term is in cell.

1:40.3

And though that wasn't a term that was written, that was around at the time of this original publication,

1:48.5

when Stephen King first wrote apt pupil,

1:51.3

I believe that it is very applicable

1:54.8

to the novella itself.

1:58.8

And I think that what we see from, from Todd Bowden in this novella,

2:07.0

can be transplanted into today. Now, I'm not saying that this is, that would lend itself to a

2:12.6

modern adaptation because so much of this, this, tethered to the particular period of time.

2:23.3

But if you were to take the Nazi component out of it and substitute it for something else,
