South Carolina is considering a law to make teaching America's "founding documents" a mandated requirement at state colleges and universities. In addition to the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, America's "founding documents" include the Federalist Papers and the Emancipation Proclamation. That's right. A (legally dubious) document presented in 1863 is now a "founding document," as are the Federalist Papers, and while I agree that Americans should read them, they are not a "founding document" either. What's going on here? Conservatives think that if every American read the Constitution, government would be smaller and people would vote better. This might be true to an extent, but I think this bill is shortsighted for one very important reason: progressives dominate college and university political science and history departments. Do we want them teaching the "founding documents"? I discuss in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.
