Hello, and thank you for listening to the history of World War II podcast, episode

423, pedestal, the final curtain.

As one can imagine, the second the Ohio was in her resting place, men rushed forward

to begin to pump the oil within her.

And though everyone else on the Ohio got off, grateful to do so, Fred Larson stayed

around to help with the work.

Honestly, he had nowhere to go.

He did not know the island, and he had pumped oil before better to be doing something

than do nothing.

And apparently the pilots of the access felt the same way as air raid alarms started going

off.

Larson asked what he was supposed to do, and he was told to head for the caves where

he would be safe, and he could get a hot meal.

As he had not had real food in the last four days, Larson's stomach decided for him.

Soon he had a shower and a breakfast in his belly.

Not that everything went swimmingly.

Larson still had his sweater from Norway with him, but now he found himself in need of

underwear, and so the British obliged.

Yet Fred had an overall negative reaction to said garments.

Quote, they also gave us their underwear, new underwear that was British.

And I don't know if you've ever seen that British underwear, but it's horrible stuff.

It's more like three quarter-linked tights.
