his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his law degree from Harvard Law School.

After law school, he clerked for Chief Justice Rhenquist and then worked in private practice.

In 1999, he joined George W. Bush's campaign for president as a domestic policy advisor.

during the Bush administration, he moved back to Texas and became the Solicitor General of Texas.
