In this episode of Newt's World I just finished reading the 13 volumes of Bernard Cornwell's

And I was thrilled because I'd already read twice his entire series on Sharp's, his remarkable

book on Agincourt and his nonfiction work on Waterloo.

And I'd gotten into all this in part because one evening over dinner General Jim Mattis

who later on became Secretary of Defense said to me he had never fully understood Waterloo

until he read Sharp's Waterloo. And I thought, well, that's a pretty good expert to have

give you advice so I dove in. And I must say both of these series are amazing. And I don't

know which is the more amazing. On the one hand Bernard Cornwell is able to take you through

the Napoleonic Wars starting with Wellesley in India and do it in a way that every adventure

is interesting and yet he is really giving you a chance to understand from the long

competition between Wellington and the French, here was gone by.

On the other hand his study of the Saxon struggle with the Danes and the rise of Alfred

the Great and the challenges of what's a cultural, racial war is just equal to this downing.
