Summary

This episode, originally recorded early in 2021, discusses a part of the pandemic no one has been talking about -- Labor & Delivery and how birthing moms have been affected by mitigation policies. This nurse explains how new babies were separated from their mothers for several weeks after birth even if there was a "suspected positive" or completely asymptomatic case. New mothers were also not allowed to breastfeed, perhaps the most important action step needed to protect the babies for their growth and development and foundational health. She also discusses the misguided policies removing birthing partners, laboring partners, spouses, and forcing masks on laboring women, and how they added to the obstacles for those going through what should have been one of the most important times of their lives.

Welcome back to another episode of what they aren't telling you and today we're going

0:18.7

to go on a continuation of our nurses series but in a slightly different direction because

0:25.5

we're going to get a specialty here that we haven't talked about yet. But one I think is

0:30.9

really important and one where the pandemic has truly infiltrated and affected the experience

0:37.6

and that's going to be in labor and delivery dealing with moms and new babies in the NICU

0:44.3

and how this pandemic has really affected that. I think that's a conversation we definitely need

0:49.2

to be having. So today's nurse will be anonymous and I'm very excited for her to join us and

0:57.1

offer this different perspective talking about mothers, talking about new babies and how do we

1:03.2

move forward to an experience that is like it used to be after what we've all gone through in

1:08.8

the last year in a couple months. So welcome to the show. Thank you. The first question I ask of

1:14.6

everyone and I kind of want to just it helps me understand so much more about where each of you

1:19.7

are coming from is what is your medical background? What is your history? What led you to the place

1:25.1

where you are and what is your specific focus? So I'm a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree.

1:32.7

On the background I've worked medical floor, I've worked home health care. Most of my time has been

1:39.3

spent OB specific. Did that answer all your questions? Yeah and in what context do you currently work?

1:48.5

So I currently work in OB with new moms, new babies and NICU. This is all within a hospital setting.

1:56.0

Has that been the majority of your nursing career all in a hospital setting? The majority

2:00.0

minus a little bit of home health but everything else been hospital setting. So the first question

2:05.1

related to COVID in the pandemic that I like to ask is in your medical experience and with your

2:15.5

point of view based on your history, do you think that the fear that was generated through this

2:21.4

entire pandemic at the beginning but all the way through overall? Do you think the fear that has

2:26.0

been generated about this entire pandemic has been warranted? No, I don't think it has. I think I
