Summary

A series of unfortunate (and hilarious) events just minutes before the start of one of the world’s most prestigious races. This week’s episode is a sprint—a short story. And you might want to hold your nose because it’s a pretty surprising, very unsettling story about a port-o-potty from Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray. Or, to up the stakes, a story about that time McGillivray nearly missed the start of the race he directs. Recently, I went to Boston to interview Dave for our story next week.

0:46.1

He's not the main subject, but he does play a part.

0:49.4

And while I was there, he told me this pretty surprising, very unfortunate story about a porta potty.

0:57.3

As Dave says, even race officials need to use them. And for Dave, timing is really important.

1:04.4

Because once the race starts, he's away from relief for a few hours.

1:08.2

And so I, because I'm going to jump on a lead motorcycle, whatever, and beyond that

1:13.4

bike, after the gunfires and everything else.

1:15.7

Again, Dave is the race director.

1:18.2

He plans for everything, including the fact that he won't have time to stand in line with

1:23.2

runners to visit the porta potty.

1:25.0

He has too many other obligations at the start of the race.

1:28.5

So? We set aside a Port-A-Jon right at the start, not just for me, but for those working

1:32.7

the start, and we put it underneath a pop-up tent so no one else can see it because we don't want

1:38.6

to attract people, and we lock it. They put a padlock on the outside.
