Summary

Legendary historian Will Durant has described the subject of this episode as “One of the great adventures in human history”. In the first part of this two-part series, we meet the main characters of our tale, when a band of over 10,000 Greek mercenaries agree to serve under the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger in a fratricidal civil war against Cyrus’ brother, King Artaxerxes II. This episode will also include a brief history of the Persian empire, tattooed, head-hunting + marijuana-consuming + sweat lodge-partaking tribal peoples, plagues, a cameo by Socrates, Machiavellian political games, the great battle of Cunaxa, and a eunuch worthy of Game of Thrones. Originally I planned to tell this story in one episode.

Problem was that after recording for a bit, I realized I was already about an hour and

1:13.0

a half in, and barely halfway in our story.

1:17.0

So yes, I could do an episode that is three or four hours long, but I really don't think

I have yet turned my Dunkarlan stripes, which allow me to record such a lengthy episode,

without alienating a sizable number of listeners.

1:32.0

So what I decided to do instead was to break it up in two parts.

Normally I release episodes about six weeks apart, but this time I release part two of the

story within two weeks from now.

1:44.0

So if you are the sort of person who likes to listen to the whole story, then you might want

1:49.0

to wait two weeks until part two is released, so you can listen to both episodes back to back.

1:55.0

On the other hand, if you don't mind breaking up the story until the next time, it is part one for you.

2:02.0

Before you start listening to episode one, I think it's fair to give your warning.
