Hello, fellow teachers. This is Casey Paul Griffiths, and welcome to another episode of gospel

teaching. An early revelation given to Joseph Smith reads, and if you receive not the Spirit,

you shall not teach. The phrase teaching by the Spirit has become shorthand in the church for good

teaching, the kind of teaching that impacts students and makes a difference in their lives.

But teaching by the spirit is a very difficult thing to actually define or quantify.

It can look very different from one teacher to another.

But it's also one of those things that you know when you see it.

In another revelation, the Savior described it by saying,

He the preacheth, and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are edified

and rejoice together. Now, on the other hand, there have been times when I have taught,

and I've not had the spirit. And I could usually scrape by using my sense of humor,

or telling some old stories or telling

a story that was designed to elicit an emotional response.

But that really isn't teaching by the spirit and I knew it when I did it.

In fact, you can spend a lifetime trying to define what teaching by the spirit means for you,

but we're going to try and give you a head start

by discussing the topic with two very gifted teachers, Ryan Sharp and Hank Smith.

Ryan and Hank have spent their careers seeking the spirit and teaching through its power,

and they're going to give us some tips on what teaching by the spirit means and how we can

find out what it means for each of us.
