Hi, I'm Michael. Welcome to Beyond the Screenplay. Today we are talking about Groundhog Day,

0:11.0

and I'm joined by the lessons from the screenplay team, writer Trisha Arand.

0:15.6

Salutations. Writer Brian Bittner. Hello, hello. Editor Alex Cayeros. Hi.

0:20.0

Trisha, you were the one that brought up Groundhog Day and suggested we do it.

0:24.2

Why did you want to talk about Groundhog Day?

0:26.4

Well, in fairness, I was not the first person to bring up Groundhog Day.

0:31.8

You've been getting requests for Groundhog Day, and it is one of the most discussed

0:37.1

and analyzed screenplays ever.

0:39.4

Of all time. Yeah. There's a specific person on Twitter that for three years now has sent me a

0:44.9

tweet on Groundhog Day being like, Groundhog Day video today? And last year, I was like,

0:49.8

you need to tell me before the day. I can't just make the video happen. But he was excited this year to

0:56.1

see that we did it. I mean, it's such a delight. And it is a movie that people come back to

1:01.0

over and over and over again, not just because it's a holiday every year. So you are going to

1:06.5

remember that it's happening and that the movie happens. But it's just, it's just so joyful,

1:12.8

the experience of watching. Actually, last year, I and some friends watched it on Groundhog Day,

1:18.2

which was the first time we'd ever done that. Like, let's just download it and watch it on

1:23.0

Groundhog Day. And it's, it's just so good. It encapsulates so many insane things about, like, holiday, the holiday and like, just American holidays, which is totally bonkers. It's a pretty strange holiday.

1:38.9

Oh, my God. Yeah. It's the most, it's the most just kind of like, how did this even begin?

1:44.3

Yeah.

1:48.5

What's like the weird like pilgrim origin story of this?

1:55.5

Yeah, it also surprised me on the YouTube comments how many people were like, why is everyone, why is so many people posting about Groundhog Day today?

1:57.5

And it's like, because it's Groundhog Day. And I realized like, oh, I guess in other parts of the world, like, they don't know that's a real holiday.
