| 0:00.0 | Hello, welcome to another episode of Mindfulness Plus. |
| 0:07.0 | I'm your host Thomas Mconke. Thank you so much for listening today. |
| 0:12.0 | So if you weren't here with us last week for the beginning of this conversation, I recommend you listen to last week's episode. |
| 0:20.0 | I introduced a new topic, a new area of practice, |
| 0:24.7 | which has really made a tremendous difference in my life. And I'm really excited to get to share |
| 0:31.2 | this content with you. I was sparing on the actual theory of what we're talking about here last week. |
| 0:39.7 | And I kind of invoked a couple of metaphors to drive home this understanding |
| 0:45.2 | that if we want to really grow up in life and we want to flourish and really express our most beautiful human capacities, |
| 0:55.4 | we not only need to, quote, grow up, |
| 0:58.5 | but we need to grow down |
| 1:00.5 | and really address the most instinctual aspects of our nature |
| 1:06.8 | because it's often our, we could say, our base, our primal, our animal instincts that can |

| 1:58.8 | So in human biology, we have certain needs that have to be met first food, |
| 2:05.7 | safety, security, etc., shelter, those kinds of things. And unless that basic need of safety, |
| 2:13.7 | security is met, we can't go on to meet higher needs. This is Maslow's genius in really |
| 2:21.5 | formulating this simple diagram of human psychology and development. And from there, you have other |
| 2:30.1 | thinkers. One of my favorite teachers on this subject is Father Thomas Keating, |
| 2:35.9 | who is a Catholic monk who did a lot to revive meditation, contemplation in the Catholic tradition |
