Andrea Kleine is the guest. Her debut novel, Calf, is available now from Counterpoint Press. This is a novel rooted in history, both personal and cultural. I lived through the cultural part of it. Anyone alive and aware in 1981 can say that. Andrea, however, lived through both parts of it, and now has a book to show for it, a book that grapples with these darknesses head on. She was in town on book tour and stopped by and sat down and gave very thoughtful responses to my questions, sometimes pausing to think things over before speaking. This is not the easiest subject matter to talk about, but she was game, and I appreciate that. Speaking of subject matter that's not easy to talk about, in today's monologue I talk about Paris and Beirut and the Russian airliner that got bombed, and terrorism, and the sorry state of the world, and so on. It is available now from Counterpoint Press. It is a work of fiction that was inspired or influenced by a couple of tragedies that happened in real life.
1:12.4	The first of which was John Hinkley Jr.'s attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan in
1:16.5	1981. And of course, in the process of shooting, not only, in the process of attempting to
1:22.5	kill President Reagan, Hinkley shot other people as well. And then secondly, this book is rooted
1:26.9	in the story of Leslie DeVoe,
1:29.0	a woman from Washington, D.C., who, I believe it was 1982,
1:33.6	in the depths of mental illness,
1:36.0	shot and killed her own daughter, her 10-year-old daughter, Aaron.
1:39.4	So a terrible story, terrible tragedies.
1:42.9	And this novel by Andrea Klein was inspired by these things.
