We have long become accustomed to Supreme Court nominees at their confirmation hearings,

doing everything they could to evade or deflect questions about how they might rule.

This has been the model ever since Robert Bork, President Reagan's controversial nominee,

gave full and revealing answers during his 1987 hearings.

His frank answers may have delighted conservative activists, but they didn't fare well with the senators who were deciding his fate.

Bork was defeated, 58 to 42, which sent a signal to future nominees, from the right and the left, how to handle the hearings, say as little as possible.

But the senators grilling Katanji Brownson didn't even pretend to ask questions about the judge's

philosophy. It was all about appealing to the base. A lot of stuff out of the Q&on playbook.

Dog whistle-like questions about crime and permissiveness directed at a black woman.

Questions about sexual predators and pornography, about the definition of the word woman,

tantrums about how Brett Kavanaugh was treated during his own confirmation hearings.
