It's no secret that Ian and I are, we're radio enthusiasts.

0:35.9

Let's just say it that way.

0:36.9

We like to listen to podcasts. We grew up on radio. That's, we're radio enthusiasts. Let's just say it that way. We like to listen to podcasts.

0:39.2

We grew up on radio. That's why we're here. Let me go off script here, Ian, and ask you,

0:44.9

what have you been listening to lately? What's on your playlist? Lately, I've been listening to a lot of

0:50.1

the guests that we have on our podcast, on other podcasts. And that's been kind of cool because you get to

0:55.3

know them a little bit. That's one of the cool things about radio is it feels like you know that person

0:59.6

like they're talking to you. You're trying to up your interview game a little bit, sounds like.

1:03.8

Well, not only that. No, I'm just, it's a fast way for me to learn about somebody. I won't reveal

1:08.3

today's guest yet. But let's just say that you're listening to some of his episodes on other podcasts, how's that going to change the way that your discussion with them goes? Maybe I'll learn about things that they're interested in that I haven't read about. So a lot of times, like, we'll do a brief, or Jane will do a brief, our producer, on the person that we're going to have on the show.

2:02.5

And a lot of times it'll link to articles and sometimes it'll link to podcasts. And I just find that it's much more comprehensive learning about somebody when they're on a radio show. Than reading about them. Yeah. Because you feel their vibe. Reading about them, it always feels filtered. When I'm listening to them, I feel like I get to know who they are, the things that really excite them through the inflection in their voice, things like that. Speaking of how to interview people, I think one of the best in the business is Bill Simmons. His show I've been listening to a lot lately. He had a recent interview with Kevin Durant, one of the best players in the NBA. And he was just so forthcoming for an athlete. Because you know how athletes are? They're so bombarded. They're often like, I'd like to

2:06.7

thank God. I'd like to thank God. Confidence is key. We play together as a team and we've toughed it out for

2:12.4

the win. But Kevin like really opened up to Bill. And I think part of the trick that he's good at is, like, you have all these things that you're curious about, but really it's about figuring out what your guest is interested in. And often what your guest is interested in isn't maybe what everybody would initially want to ask him about, you know? Everyone wants to ask him about, you know, the latest scandal or whatever. And if you ask that his question, like your interview is just going to be like, here we go again, you know? Essentially, I think what you're saying and what Bill does is he builds trust by speaking to them about their interests. There's always that one issue. Like, are you going to ask him about X or whatever? And he'll often, like, build trust over the course of interview.

2:51.6

And he's like, I'm not even going to ask you about X because, and he'll say something like close to it, but not exactly that question.

2:58.1

And eventually that person is ready to talk about it at that point, a Bill Simmons trick.

3:02.5

He'd come in through the side door.
