At first blush, the Republican victories on Election Day last week were not completely unexpected.

Polls in Virginia had the gubernatorial race close,

and we know what they often say about these off-year elections after a presidential race.

If a Democrat is in the White House, the GOP has a good year, and vice versa. Think 2016 with Donald Trump elected president, which was followed by Democrats winning the

governorships in Virginia and New Jersey the following year, with Ralph Northman, Virginia,

and Phil Murphy in New Jersey. The same scenario occurred in 2009, with Barack Obama in the

White House and a GOP sweep of the governorships.

2001, with George W. Bush as president, a Democratic sweep.

1993, a President Bill Clinton and a Republican sweep that year.

I think you get my point.

So, last week, when Glenn Yonkin was elected governor in Virginia and Jack Chittarelli nearly won the governorship in New Jersey, that really wasn't a big deal, right?
