So, welcome back.

What were we talking about again? Oh, that's right, the devil.

Specifically, we've been talking about the origin and history of the devil,

because when I bite off more than I can chew, I like to take as big a bite as possible.

So far, we've examined some early Mesopotamian deities, you know,

like Teumat, the great dragon who flooded the earth and may have served as an early inspiration

for the devil. Then we talked about a handful of Canaanite deities that weren't exactly evil,

but they weren't what you could really consider good guys.

Now, we have to remember that a lot of these deities got what I called a malevolent makeover.

You know, most of them didn't start out as bad guys, but they happened to belong to a city-state

or a kingdom that was, at some point in their story, an enemy of Israel.
