I'm a fellow and national security law here and managing editor of the LawFair blog,

issues. That means we have followed a certain story that has been in the news lately. It's the

story that I suspect brought all of you here and also brought our speaker today, Bob Lit, the

the recent revelations about certain intelligence activities. Our government chiefly

surveillance conducted pursuant to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or FISA.

That, I think it's fair to say, has generated some controversy about the legality,

about the effectiveness and the wisdom of these surveillance activities. And there are also

some pretty serious questions about privacy as we live now in an era in which vast swaths of our

personal data are pushed out into the cloud to third parties. We're going to hear about that.
