Summary

Today, we have a visitor from the Netherlands. Frank Dutman first heard about the trail in some unrelated research back in the late 90s. Since then, he's immersed himself in further research, and this year he achieved his dream of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail.

We hear a European perspective, even a European sensibility, in his approach to the trail and the preparations he made towards achieving his goal. Along the way, he tended to hike mainly alone, allowing himself the luxury of self-reflection, something that he valued highly.

You can follow Frank's journey via his blog, at http://www.polarsteps.com/dut. However, it is written in Dutch so, unless you can find a translate button, you'll need to know that language!!

Also today, our fourth member of the Mighty Blue Class of 2023, Samantha Galbo, introduces herself, sharing some of her background and reasons she wants to hike next year. You can follow Samantha on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/grassrooted.ascension/.

Hi guys, welcome back to the show. This is episode number 350 of Marty Blue on the Appalachian Trail, the ultimate midlife crisis. And I'm your host, Steve Adams. Otherwise known as Mighty Blue when I did a couple of through hikes of the 80s in 2014 and again in 2019. This week for our 350th show, we have a guest from the Netherlands. Frank Dutman, who ended up with the most

predictable trail name of Heineken, completed the trail this year and went with a particular

thought on his mind. He'd wanted to hike the 80s since doing some unrelated research at

the end of the last century and he found himself reflecting on the first 55 years of his life,

1:08.7

while he also considered what he wanted to do with the next 55 years of his life, while he also considered what he wanted to do with the next

55 years of his life. Because, as you know, there's plenty of free time to think out there.

He's a fascinating guy who has lived a rather eclectic life. Frank will be on in a moment.

Also today, Samantha Galbo shares her reasons for going on the trial next year and becomes

one of our Mighty Blue Class of 2023. Samantha is currently living in Costa Rica, so hopefully she's going to

follow the path of previous guests, Chika and Sunsets, who also moved here from Costa Rica to

hike the AT. Samantha is on after Frank. Then George Tfanos has reached Shandah and is discovering

the goodies to be had by

every through hiker who enters that park. But let's get on and start with Frank Dutman or

Heineken. So today's guest is from the Netherlands, a country not exactly renowned for

its mountainous terrain. This is Frank

Dutman or Heineken. Hey, Frank, how are you? I'm great. Thank you. Thank you for having me on

the show. Well, thanks for coming on the show. Yeah, it's Holland is flat as a pancake,

so not known for hiking at all. But that's why I came out to the States, really.
