Sexual ethics is the study of human sexuality and sexual behaviour. In a word, it seeks to understand and evaluate the moral conduct of relationships and sexual activities from a philosophical perspective.
Sex is hugely important to us all. Sex is an expression of love. It forms the foundation of our family lives, our social lives and even our self-identities. For many, we should celebrate sex, for we owe it our very existence! On the other hand, sex can be the cause of great pain and suffering. While sex brings life, no doubt, it ruins the lives of many. Cases of exploitation, harassment, assault and rape, show the darkest side of humanity.
Sex can both make and corrupt humans. For Christians, different sexual acts and preferences can lead them closer to, and further away from God. For many moral philosophers, sexual acts can lead them closer to and further away from what is right. Moral philosophers and theologians have long pondered questions surrounding this sensitive topic, and there is a lot more to be said that goes beyond the scope of this episode. In this episode, we will exclusively be tackling issues surrounding marriage and sexuality.

0:00.0 | Part four, further analysis and discussion. Right, we're at that point of the show where the shackles are off, we've got through the content, and there's some fascinating stuff within there. |
0:26.0 | We've stuck exclusively to premarital, extramarital homosexuality, off the microphone or speaking to Oliamone ago about. |
0:32.9 | It would have been great for the specification to include some other things in regards to not just homosexuality, |
0:38.6 | but sexuality. We could have looked at like sex robots, tune into the after show if you |
0:43.3 | want to hear us discussing that. But if you want to bring in other examples, it's fine at this |
0:48.1 | point. So what are our thoughts on these issues? Is there a philosophical approach that you |
0:53.4 | subscribe to that we can apply to these |
0:55.4 | and just unpack anything we have no chance to discuss? |
1:00.6 | Well, one of the things I would start with, and this is kind of going, reaching back to our |
1:04.5 | meta-ethical episode, which is that I kind of, at least currently subscribing to the idea |
1:10.6 | that we do have moral progress. |
1:13.3 | So the fact that at least in the UK right now that more people than ever have rights to |
1:19.6 | freely express their love and to be able to get married by a choice seems to me to be objectively |
1:26.9 | better than what it was, say, a hundred years ago, |
1:30.2 | that the rights for women and gay people have hugely improved, and that that ultimately is a good thing. |
1:38.2 | Now, that doesn't mean that I would necessarily say, oh, and therefore, like, everybody can freely |
1:43.3 | cheat on their partners whenever |
1:44.6 | they want, and, like, everything's acceptable, because that's simply just not the case. |
1:48.4 | But, no, I think it's, we are in a good place right now, and we seem to be making strides |
1:54.2 | in the right direction, in my opinion. |
1:56.6 | I found this topic so interesting to research, and my research went into lots of very different places with it. |
2:02.6 | I find the topic of human sexuality incredibly fascinating and just the history of us as a species. |
