Summary

Episode 34: Starting Solids: Stress Free Baby-Led Weaning & Tackling Picky Eating with Jenny Best, Founder of @solidstarts Starting solids can be so exciting but also so nerve-wrecking as a new parent! Feeding can be just as divisive as sleep these days, and this week Rachael is joined by Jenny Best, the founder of Solid Starts, to talk about the “best” way to begin your little one on solid foods.   Jenny shares her journey of being a mom while building a super successful resource for parents to prevent picky eating and find joy in feeding their children. She discusses the importance of responsive feeding and the benefits of both baby-led weaning as well as spoon feeding. Jenny also addresses the challenges faced by medical professionals in keeping up with rapidly changing research and the need for better communication between healthcare providers and parents. She emphasizes the importance of trusting your child and provides tips for easing anxiety when starting solids.  Additionally, Jenny dispels common misconceptions about choking, the difference between toddler selectivity and severe picky eating, and more. You’ll hear some strategies for encouraging exploration and problem-solving at mealtime, and finally, Jenny shares her most important advice for new parents.  Jenny is a mom of three on a quest to help parents prevent picky eating and find joy at the table together. Prior to launching Solid Starts, Jenny led communications at various food non profits and served many years in the NYC government. Before that, she was a professional ballerina with the New York City Ballet. government. And before that, she was a professional ballerina, which is like my favorite little fun fact about you. Thank you so much for joining us today. Thank you for having me, Rachel. It's good to be here. I'm so excited to have you because we've been in contact really since the beginning. Like we started our accounts on Instagram, maybe in the same month. Did you start in March 2020, like peak pandemic times?

0:55.5

Yeah. I must have been right before you then. I think I was in 2019. But yes, it was definitely that

1:01.1

moment in time. That insane moment in time. And you were really like such a pioneer in the Instagram,

1:10.1

like quote unquote parenting expert or, you know,

1:12.8

whatever you want to call it, space. There really were not so many resources before you started

1:18.4

your account. And I was super interested in baby lead weaning as a new mom when I started,

1:23.3

you know, kind of like that food journey. And all I had was a book, really. So like your account and your

1:28.3

resources were so helpful. And before we kind of dive into our conversation today, I would love to

1:33.0

just hear from you as like a mom who built this incredible business and this incredible resource for

1:40.6

other parents. How did you do that? Because you are also a mom of three. And so I know how

1:46.2

it is. And you have been so incredibly successful. So I would love to hear how you did it,

1:53.0

where you got the idea in the first place to start this type of an Instagram page. Yeah. I mean,

2:00.0

it's funny because now our Instagram is actually

2:02.6

one of the smaller sort of pieces of what we do. Our app is in the top 10% of the world,

2:07.4

our free food database. We can kind of look and see how to cut any food for a baby. And we're

2:11.9

writing two books and we've got like 17 million visitors with the website each month or something

2:17.3

crazy.
