We left off last time with the Battle of Arcolae,

which ended on November 17, 1796.

Arcolay was a bloody messy affair, but it ended with a French victory, forcing Austrian

commander Joseph Al-Vinche to halt his offensive and retreat back to Habsburg territory.

In his initial report of the battle, Napoleon wrote that Arcolay had decided the fate of Italy.

He may have let victory go to his head a little.
