Summary

Nicole Bitter is an ultramarathon athlete with a long resume that includes three top 10 finishes at the Western States 100, wins at the Black Canyon 100km, Javelina 100, and multiple podium finishes at competitive events from 50km through 100 miles. This year, she finished third in what was the most competitive Javelina 100 field to date, and likely the second most competitive100 mile in the United States this year. The level of competition and the addition of a third category (non-binary) where both new elements to this years race, which added to the complexity of how things played out in the results and reporting during the race.

All right, folks, welcome back to another episode of the Human Performance Outliers podcast.

0:14.2

I'm your host, Zach Bitter.

0:15.1

And today I am joined by a guest for this interview, my wife, Nicole Bitter.

0:25.6

Nicole just recently completed the Havillena 100 this last weekend, and that race was really, really exciting for a variety of reasons.

0:31.6

One being that it was pretty easily the most competitive field that the Havillina 100 has put together on the women's side to date.

0:42.2

And on top of that, in my opinion, it was probably the second most competitive female hunter-mile field in the United States behind the Western States' endurance run, which is pretty much every year the most competitive Hunter-Miler on both the men's and

0:55.3

women's side from one year to the next into United States. And oftentimes, it's not even

0:59.9

close, which I think the women's field this year got about as close to Western states-level

1:05.2

competition as we've seen for the most part. So there's a lot of anticipation with this one leading into it, a lot of

1:12.3

potential outcomes and such a wide variety. And Nicole and I touched on this a little bit in the

1:17.4

beginning, so I won't get into too much detail here, just the types of runners that kind of came

1:21.7

in their resumes and how their strengths and backgrounds kind of differed, but all culminated in

1:27.0

what was ultimately a very exciting day.

1:29.5

And it lived up to expectations, no doubt.

1:33.8

Within that topic, what we're going to talk about a little bit is just Nicole's kind of preparation,

1:38.2

kind of what makes maybe her buildups unique, given her career occupation that goes alongside her training and racing, which can oftentimes

1:45.4

make preparing for these sort of things a little bit unique. Also, just a little bit of

1:51.2

a outline of kind of how the day went for her and like how the day played out. And then ultimately,

1:57.5

a topic that is both relative to this year's Havelina 100, but also a bigger topic that I think is in need of having more discussion in sports in general, but also within the ultramarathon and running community too, which is how are we going to categorize events going forward?

2:16.4

So what made this year's Haavillina 100 a bit more

2:19.5

unique than prior years is they released a third category for the race. So the typical male,
