Friday, November 22, 1963 was not just the day President Kennedy was assassinated in Daly Plaza.

For Sylvia Torado de Duran, it was supposed to be a day of celebration.

It was her 26th birthday.

That morning, she had gone to work at the Cuban consulate at the corner

of Tacobaya and Francisco Marquez Streets. The compound was a multi-story building surrounded

by residential houses, featuring the consular office, a cultural office, and a garden courtyard.

The Lopez report later clarified that the

consulate was actually in a separate building from the embassy, a detail that had confused

investigators for years. A CIA surveillance post, code-named Leonion, in a third-floor apartment

across Francisco Marquez Street employed one agent

and one window to photograph the embassy entrance, while a pulse camera covered the consulate entrance

from another window. Sylvia worked in a consular office on the first floor. Consul

Lusayevio Askew sat in a smaller private office

that he shared with his incoming replacement, Alfredo Maribald-Diaz.

Sylvia sat in a larger reception area facing the door,

the door that went out to the street.

Around noon on her birthday, someone rushed in and announced that Kennedy had been killed.
