Thank you. The Minds of Madness podcast. Listener discretion is advised. It was the morning of April 7, 2018, in Palm Coast, Florida, a city on the Atlantic coast nestled about halfway between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach.

At a single-story home on 23 Feltter Lane, one family was getting a late start to their

morning around 9.30 a.m.

36-year-old Keith Johansson and his wife, 25-year-old Brandy Salenza, had fallen asleep on the

couch watching movies the night before. They might have slept even longer, but Brandy's six-year-old

son was already awake, waiting patiently for breakfast, wrapped

in a hooded blanket with teddy bear ears. He sat at the table eating cereal while Brandy

brewed coffee nearby. Following breakfast, Brandy's son went into his bedroom to watch TV.

He was excited about that day because his mother was taking him to the

fair later on. While her son watched TV, Keith and Brandy spent some time in the backyard hammock.

Brandy, who adored nature and all things outdoors, loved looking up from the hammock met the towering pine

trees.

In fact, having some trees in her backyard was one of her favorite things about the new house they'd just moved into less than three months earlier.
