I've noticed that as I study scripture that there are various key phrases in

scripture that can be easily overlooked. Often because we simply don't yet

understand them or have sufficient background knowledge to draw out their

intended meaning or importance. This is an only true of ancient scripture from

a long time and context ago, but also true of modern. I remember one year as I was

a young seminary teacher I came across one such passage in the doctrine and

covenants. Reading in doctrine covenant section 128, a letter written by

Joseph Smith to the church in 1842, I came to Joseph Smith's triumphal climax

where he says, now what do we hear in the gospel which we have received? A voice

of gladness, a voice of mercy from heaven, and a voice of truth out of the

earth? The prophet then goes on to list various angelic ministers and heavenly

visitations that were key to the restoration, including glad tidings from

Camorra, Maroni, an angel from heaven and of quote, and also quote Michael on the

banks of the Sesquahana, detecting the devil when he appeared as an angel of

light exclamation point, which by the way is another subject for another

podcast on an entirely different day. But then Joseph talks about something

familiar, quote the voice of Peter, James, and John, declaring themselves as

possessing the keys of the kingdom, and of the dispensation of the fullness of

times end of quote. But then comes the easily overlooked yet important phrase

that I had no idea what to do with, how to explain, or what it meant as a young

seminary teacher. Joseph says in verse 21, quote, and again, the voice of God in
